The capital and largest city of the southern Indian state of Karnataka is Bengaluru, formerly known as Bangalore. With 8.4 million residents, the city was the most populated city in South India and the third most populated city in India according to the 2011 census. With 10.5 million residents, the Bengaluru metropolitan region ranked as the nation’s fourth most populous urban agglomeration. At 900 meters above sea level, it is situated close to the Deccan Plateau’s heart. The city’s parks and green spaces have earned it the moniker “Garden City” in India.

One of the Indian metropolises with the quickest rate of growth is Bengaluru. With an expected GDP of $359.9 billion as of 2023, the Bengaluru metropolitan region was one of India’s most productive metro areas. Bengaluru is categorized as an alpha city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, which ranks it as one of the most integrated cities in the world economy. The city’s diverse industrial base is reliant on services, manufacturing (36%), and agriculture, and it accounts for almost one-third of the state’s gross state product. The fourth-largest market for fast-moving consumer products in the nation is located in Bengaluru. Additionally, the city is home to the third-highest concentration of wealthy people in India. Information technology, autos, aerospace, textiles, heavy machinery, biotechnology, electronics, communication, agriculture, and food processing are some major industrial sectors.

A significant hub for information technology (IT), Bengaluru is frequently listed as one of the technological cities with the fastest rates of growth in the world. Many people consider it to be the “Silicon Valley of India” and the nation’s biggest center for IT. The city accounts for about one-third of India’s overall IT exports, with an expected $64 billion in 2024 IT exports from the city. Electronic City, International Tech Park, Software Technology Park, Bagmane Tech Park, Global Village Tech Park, World Trade Center, and Manyata Embassy company parks are just a few of the company clusters and special economic zones that comprise the city’s IT sector.

The Bangalore Water supplies and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), founded in 1964, provides water supplies. Rainfall supplies the city with 800 million gallons of water every day on average. To store the rainwater, Kempe Gowda built lakes like the Kempambudhi Kere in the 16th century. In 2021, the city’s daily water use was 2100 million liters, of which the corporation provided 1,450 million liters. Although the city formerly obtained its water supply from the Arkavathy River, the Cauvery water delivery network was established in 1964 as a result of growing needs. In 1974, the Kaver provided the majority of the city’s water supply, which increased to 1,450 million liters per day in 2014.

The nodal organization in charge of the city’s planning and development is the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), which was founded in 1976. To plan and carry out civic and infrastructure projects in the city, the BBMP collaborates with the BDA and the Agenda for Bangalore’s Infrastructure and Development Task Force (ABIDe). The planning of the metropolitan area is the responsibility of the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which was founded in 1985. As the capital of Karntaka, the city is home to the governor’s residence at Raj Bhavan, state ministries at Vikasa Soudha, and the state executive and legislative offices in Vidhana Soudha.
